Excitement
Get your child excited in learning Chinese. Interest is the best teacher. Think of our hobbies, what motivates us to engage in our hobbies? It is the excitement and pleasure that we derived from our hobbies that keep us moving. Similarly, in learning languages, we need to heighten our children’s interests in learning Chinese, an engaged lesson, language games, skillful teachers, effective lesson delivery, conducive environment all these will help to entice our children to learn.

Encouragement
Everyone needs encouragement. Encouragement can do miracle. Sometimes, our children need our moral support and praises more than anything else. In their growing up years and learning journey, parents’ support and encouragement play a pivotal role in grooming the characters of our children. Studies have also shown that students with strong parental support generally perform better academically.

Exemplify
Very often, we hear parents telling their children that they can’t help them because they are also not good at Chinese. This is rather worrying as our children will think “since Daddy and Mummy can’t do it, it is perfectly fine for me not doing well as well”. Unknowingly, this has indirectly discouraged our children to learn. These children would find excuses to avoid learning Chinese. Children always look up to us, so it is important we lead by example, even though we might not be able to give them the right answer, but we definitely able to give them the right attitude in life.

Empower
We need to empower our children to learn effectively. Study smart, not study hard. Our children need to be equipped with the effective learning strategies, they need to cultivate the inquiring minds, they need to learn beyond textbooks. Tuition and enrichment centres with a strong curriculum and accreditation (for example all teachers need to be NIE-trained and undergone training) will provide the additional support to let our children excel in Chinese. However, do ensure that the teachers have the credentials and teaching competencies, to ensure high-quality lessons.

Excellence
The goal of learning Chinese is to work towards the mastery of the language, and this is the highest level of language learning. As Funtastic Chinese Education Hub’s Academic Advisor Professor Kenneth DEAN puts it,

“Many students think that it is not necessary to learn Chinese, however, they failed to look at the big picture. China is such a vast market. Singapore needs to collaborate with China in different ways. Hence, we need to nurture talent who is not only effectively bilingual, but one who is bicultural with very high standard of Chinese.”
